SEASON 1991 A NEW EXECUTIVE MEMBER FEES RISE !!
DOWN TO 4 DIVISIONS !!!

Chairman Bernard welcomed everyone to the A.G.M. and was delighted to report that Bill Davies had volunteered to take up the position of the Individuals Tournament Organiser. Bernard had been doing this job as well as the Chairman’s work and the work of the League Secretary when no one volunteered to fill the vacant positions.
Unfortunately, David Haycocks was unable to continue as Knock-Out Secretary. Fortunately, June Fielding volunteered to take up that Office as well as continuing as Minute Secretary. Bernard was happy. He did not have to take on that role as well. MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED. More helpers mean the League will prosper. All the other officials were re-elected.
Following a loss of £117.00 in the meeting passed the 1990 suggestion that Subscriptions should rise by £1.00 to £5 before the end of June and £6 thereafter.

There were no new applications to join the League. Sadly Walkers C withdrew.

Bill Davies organised the Individuals Tournament to run throughout the season. Players were given about 2 weeks to arrange and play each match. The winners telephoned the result. The Finals were played on one day at the end of the Season.

SEASON 1992 BETTER RETURN OF MATCH CARDS

Chairman Bernard welcomed everyone to a new season. He thought 1991 had been a good competitive season and complimented teams on returning the Match Cards more efficiently allowing the League Tables to be regularly updated. Bernard informed everyone it was his 45th year in the Walkden Tennis League and hoped it would be an enjoyable one.
The Treasurer reported a loss last season of £117.00 but match fees would remain at £5.00. Good news for everyone
Chairman Bernard was re-elected as were all the officials. Bernard was still doing the job of Secretary and appealed for someone to volunteer for the position.
Following the trial over the last two seasons of the suggested alternate order of play Bernard reported we would be returning to the original Rule 17. The alternate method had created a tense atmosphere when players had a genuine reason for late arrival. |Bernard stressed “We play for fellowship as well as competition.”
Format -39 teams were organised into 4 divisions:- Div. 1 -11 teams, Divs. 2&3- 10 teams, Div.4 -9 teams. During the Season an Executive Meeting was held to listen to the complaints about the court conditions of some Clubs. The matter was to be investigated.
The meeting listened to complaints about the playing of higher ranked players on lower teams and dealt with the offenders by awarding the match to the non-offending teams.
El lesmere organised the Presentation Dance at their Club. A great night! Lots of Dancing and fun.

SEASON 1993 A NEW SECRETARY GOOD NEWS!

Excellent News! Marjorie McCormick (Guildhall T.C. ) has agreed after shadowing Chairman Bernard over the last year to take on the Office of Secretary of the League. Marjorie has played for Guildhall T.C since 1963 and felt after enjoying 30 years of Walkden League Tennis she should put something back and keep the League successful for the players of the future. Having retired and married off her two daughters, Alison and Janette, Marjorie felt she needed a new challenge. Husband Dav, the League Vice Chairman and Chairman Bernard convinced her that this was just the job for her. Thank you, Marjorie and Good Luck. The League thanked Chairman Bernard for coping with the two roles over the last few years.
All the Officers were re-elected.
There were no new applications to join the League. Resignations were received from Ellesmere C and D teams.
Format for 1993 was 39 teams into 4 Divisions …. Divs. 1, 2 & 3 – 10 teams, Div. 4 -9 teams. Over the last few years, the number of players had dropped slightly and it was hoped this would not continue.
Alas, there was another loss over the year of £109.00 due to the cost of running the Individuals Tournaments (mainly Trophy expenses). A profit from the Dance of £50.00 had kept the loss down but the Treasurer felt he no choice but to raise the team subscriptions to £8.00 per team (£9.00 if paid late). The situation would be reviewed at the end of the season.
Guildhall Tennis Club (noted for its good catering at Club events) organised the Presentation Dance and decided to do food refreshments themselves (even catering for players with vegan requests) to try to boost attendance. British Legion Club was very helpful allowing the Club to do the catering and it worked. Attendance was up and a terrific evening was had by all a terrific evening was enjoyed by all.

SEASON  1994            LEAGUE     FEES     RAISED

TOSS A COIN FOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS VENUE

Chairman Bernard thanked all the officials for their hard work over last season. A special thanks were expressed to Marjorie on her first year as League Secretary which was so efficiently carried out.  A good season’s tennis had been enhanced by the keenness shown at the Veterans’ Individual Tournament. Looking forward to more of the same in 1994.

Treasurer John reported that the overall League losses of the last few seasons had left him with no choice and team subscriptions would be increased to £8.009 (£9.00 if late). The situation would be reviewed at the end of the season.

Bernard and Marjorie  hoped the new season’s results match cards would arrive by the Friday following a match or at the latest by the Monday  properly completed and legible.( Some were very puzzling !) Fines had been imposed on Clubs failing to send in cards following the last match of 1993.

New cards would be with Clubs before the start of the season.
All old match cards must be destroyed.

Knock –Out result cards must be sent by the HOME team   not by the winning team.

There were no new applications to join the League and no  resignations.

Two Clubs had changed their names :- Hindley had become Lowton and Oakwood had become Tyldesley.  Once more a 4 Division format was organised with Divs. 1,2 and 3 having10 teams and Div. 4 – 9 teams.

The week of the Bolton Charity Tournament was left  free of matches for players who wanted to take part.

The 1994 Presentation Dance was in the hands of  Lowton. T.C.

It was suggested the Knock-out Finals be on a neutral ground to be agreed by the finalists. After discussion with 8 matches having to be played this was not practical. It was decided to let the Ladies and Gents finalist pairs of each Division arrange the date they would play on and toss a coin for which team would play at  “ Home.”

SEASON  1995     TEAM  SUBSCRIPTIONS   TO   REMAIN   AT    £8.00

After Chairman Bernard had welcomed everyone and thanked the  League Officials for all their work he reported that once again we were looking forward to another enjoyable season. He hoped that as last year there would be fewer disputes and encouraged Clubs to get their players to read the League Rules.

Secretary Marjorie reported that there  had been some difficulties at the beginning of the season as some Clubs had not informed all their players about the change of Venue of one Club and players went to the wrong Venue. Club Officials must pass on information sent to all Club Secretaries before the season started.

A reminder was given that “ Home” team were responsible for sending  the Knock-Out  result not the Winning Team.

The Treasurer was delighted a small profit was shown on last year’s accounts. Team Subscriptions would remain at £8.00 (£9.00 if paid after the Dance.)

Bill Davies requested all Individuals entering the League Tournament provide  correct names and addresses on the entry forms to make contact between them easier.

There were no new teams wanting to join the League and only Tyldesley C  resigned.  Therefore the format for Divisions would be Divs. 1& 2 – 10teams, Divs. 3&4 – 9 teams.

No matches during the Bolton Charity was requested and agreed.

Kearsley Tennis Club would organise the 1995 presentation Dance

SEASON  1996    NEW  SENIOR INDIVIDUALS ORGANISER  NEEDED

Chairman Bernard welcomed everyone to a new season. He remarked that it had been a wonderful season for good weather and a record for the League when one team scored no points at all— this being his own team Parrfold B!!! He thanked all the officers for their hard work last year and the meeting duly elected all but one (Bill Davies) for another year.  Bill did not want to organise the Seniors Individuals Tournament this year but was prepared to continue organising the Under 21’s events.  Chairman Bernard thanked Bill for his work and remarked on the increase number of entries over the past few years. He asked for a volunteer to take over from Bill but there were no offers.

Secretary Marjorie hoped for the better return of result cards this season. She was disappointed that so many teams did not take part in the 1995  K.O. Cup Competition on the first Friday night. In future the first round  would take place on a Wednesday night which would half the number of teams having to play on a Friday night the designated night for the K.O.Cup Competition matches.

All matches must start at 6.30p.m.. No knocking up practice after 6.30p.m.  Regarding League Rule 17  “MAY” claim the first set at 6.45p.m. was changed to “MUST” claim the first set at 6.45p.m.    Court directions are sent to all Clubs before the start of the season.  “Got Lost” is not an excuse.

League subscriptions to remain the same at £8.00.

No applications for membership of the League and no resignations received. Format – as last year – 2 teams up and 2 teams down – Divs. 1&2 – 10 teams, Divs. 3& 4 – 9 teams.

Leigh Tennis Club organised the Dance which was enjoyed by those who attended

SEASON   1997   NO VOLUNTEER FOR TOURNAMENT OFFICER

Chairman Bernard  had taken on the job as Tournament Organiser in season 1996 as no one came forward to do it. There had been a poor number of entries. Some matches were finals only. Chairman Bernard asked Club Secretaries to put the entry forms up earlier and encourage members to participate.

Secretary Marjorie reported that the return of both League and Knock-Out Match Result Cards had improved last season.  Keep it up!  The first round of the 1997 Knock-Out Competition would be on a Wednesday and the following rounds on a Friday.

Treasurer John reported that Team Subscriptions would remain at £8.00 in spite of a loss of £54.54 last season.

   League officers were all re-elected.

A resignation from Bolton  B team had been received and there were no new applications. There would be three Divisions of 10 and Division 4 would have 8 teams.

Leigh had organised a successful Presentation Dance at the end of the 1996 season. It was Monton Tennis Club’s turn to organise the Presentation Dance at the end of the 1997 Season.

SEASON 1998     TOURNAMENT ORGANISER JOB—– STILL OPEN !

Chairman Bernard was pleased with the way matches had been played in the right spirit last year. He was looking forward to another good year. He welcomed all the Club representatives and thanked the League Officials for their work in 1997. Trish Brookes (Guildhall T.C.) volunteered to take on the the post of Trophy Secretary. The League still needed a volunteer to take over the post of IndividualsTournament Organiser.

Secretary Marjorie complimented  the teams for the better return of League Match Cards. Unfortunately during the last few weeks of the season it wasn’t as good. Team Captains being away on holiday  was the most likely the reason. Please make sure any substitute Captains are aware of their responsibilities this season.  The return of  K.O. Match Cards still leaves much to be desired !  She pleaded with Clubs to find a volunteer to organise the Individuals Tournament Competition as it was not fair that the job fell onto Chairman Bernard as it had done last year.

Team subscriptions to remain at £8.00 (£9.00 if late). A small profit of  £37.48 was made over 1997

Clubs were asked to encourage team players to enter the Individuals Tournament and to make sure their entries names were put in the right section.

SEASON 1999  CHAIRMAN BERNARD TO BE MILLENNIUM MAYOR

The Walkden and District Tennis League felt very proud when in June 1999, Chairman Bernard was invested as Mayor of Salford for the Millennium Year (1999 – 2000) and would be part of all the celebrations throughout the year.   He invited a few of the League Officers to the “ Mayor Making” ceremony which was very interesting and enjoyable.  Congratulations and good wishes were sent to Bernard and his wife and Mayoress Jean from the League. They both looked splendid and impressive in their Regalia and Chains of Office.

Obviously the demand on Chairman Bernard ‘s time would be considerable, so at the A.G.M. he requested that a volunteer from the assembled Club Representatives would come forward to organise the Individuals Tournament which had been vacant for two or three years and which he had been forced to run. Alas, no one offered to do the job which was very disappointing. Vice-Chairman, David McCormick, who had been unable to attend the A.G.M. offered to take up the Office when he heard no one had volunteered to do it at the A.G. M.  It had been hoped that someone new would join the League Officials but it was not to be. WHY is the Question?   The Walkden Tennis League came into being for the benefit of the Clubs in the area providing the opportunity to play more tennis against different opponents, to challenge and improve skills, to reward effort and to develop fellowship. It does not organise itself and therefore needs members to give something back for that opportunity.

Let’s hope the dawn of a New Millennium invokes a revival of the spirit which inspired the Founding Clubs as we look forward to 2022 to celebrate the Centenary of the Walkden and District Tennis League.

All the Other League Officials were re-elected.
Format of the 1999 Season, following the acceptance of Lowton into the League and the resignation of Winton C,  Monton  B and Golborne, who withdrew at the last minute leaving  33 competing teams which were divided into 4 Divisions. Divs. 1 & 2 – 9 teams, Div. 3 – 8 teams, Div. 4 – 7 teams. Treasurer John’s said that Team Subscriptions would remain at £8.00 despite a loss over the year of £68.95 as the balance in the bank was £359.38.
Marjorie reported Cup Result Cards MUST be returned promptly so that teams could be informed by the Secretary who their next opponent would be. It was decided that Clubs would be fined £5.00 for late return of Result Cards  St. Marks organised the Presentation Dance which was a success.
